Nihi Sumba

Nihi Sumba Island Resort rests on a pristine stretch of coastline on Sumba island, 400km East of Bali in Indonesia. The island is rich in long held traditions and feels a million miles away from the bustle of Bali, yet the flight is less than one hour.

Our guests generally fly into Bali and we let them acclimatize with a night at a luxury resort, Spa and delectable dinner. After a short flight the following day, rustic paradise awaits. Of course its luxurious, with superb personal service, but in an understated, tropical island way. There are also lots of cool activities at Nihi Sumba to keep you, your partner and kids (if you have them) amused. Water babies will love the snorkelling and Stand-Up Paddle. Imagine taking an SUP tour on a Sumbanese river adventure, passing local villagers and wildlife along the way. Private a boat charter for the day or head out to some amazing surf breaks with a guide. If surfing is your thing, you’ll share waves with no more than ten other surfers and the resort also organizes Surfaris. They also arrange sustainable spear fishing, trekking to amazing waterfalls and horse riding trails through bush and beach. Kids can splash around in the rock pools, build sand castles on the beach and enjoy family beach activities with Nihi Sumba.

Of course the cultural activities are totally authentic, so do get to meet the locals. The weavers are super talented and the annual Pasola event is something amazing to witness. Usually held across February/March, this mounted spear competition is an ancient war ritual, which gives thanks to ancestral spirits. You can also tour The Sumba Foundation, something close to our hearts.  It has brought health, nourishment, education, and enriched the lives of many indigenous Sumbanese people.
