Discover Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple
Take an informed guide and climb the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Borobudur to witness some of the most well maintained relief panels and life sizes Buddha statues in Asia. A 9th century Mahayana Buddhist temple, it was abandoned in the 14th century, during the decline of Hinduism in the region. In 1814 Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, then the British ruler of Java, was informed of the temple by locals. It’s since been delicately restored. The lesser known ancient complex of Prambanan plays host to beautiful Hindu temples from the 9th century, also well worth a visit.
From the verdant Menorah hills to the dramatic climb up Mount Merapi, Java is a great place to trek. Clove plantations, rice fields and rainforest make up this fertile landscape. The walk to Selogriyo, an 8th-century Hindu temple isolated high up the slopes of Mt Sumbing, passing through some of Java’s most enchanting rice paddies.
A visit to Java wouldn’t be complete without a Javanese ‘Lulur’ Spa treatment. Indulged by local Royalty, this divine Spa treatment includes a relaxing oil massage, a full body mask and exfoliation, using natural ingredients such as white turmeric, rice and honey. The experience ends with a warm herbal bath. You’ll be left feeling like a prince or princess.
