Ask the Experts : Oriental Medicine

Qigong at Como Bali

I’ve been feeling the stress of running a business, being a single Mum of a six year old and going back to business school lately. I knew that my body was out of sync, but I didn’t ‘have time’ to do anything about it. Screech and rewind!

I run a luxury wellness travel company for goodness sake. How am I supposed to inspire others if I can’t keep myself balanced and healthy?  Without further ado, I booked a private consultation in with David Melladew, Oriental Medicine Consultant at one of our favourite wellness sanctuary partners, COMO Shambhala Estate in Bali.

David Melladew at Como

He began the session with a divine tea ceremony. I love people who are passionate about what they do and that shone through with David. Like myself, he has a genuine drive to help others live in health and vitality and by the end of my consultation I had a accurate diagnosis, an action plan of what to do about it which included some easy steps to do at home and he’d inspired me so much on Traditional Chinese Medicine, that I felt like going to college again!

In this Ask the Experts Health Blog I ask David about Stress and how Oriental Medicine can play a part in finding that essential life balance. Chill out and read on…

A new meditation teacher in Bali

One of the great things about owning Soul Sanctuaries is that we get asked to help out on amazing new projects in Asia. Our co-founder Joanne McFarlane has the honour of acting as an Asian Spa Consultant for the launch of Indonesia’s first Heavenly Spa by Westin in Nusa Dua in Bali. On December 1st the new 16 treatment room luxury spa will open, featuring extensive his and his thermal facilities, spa treatments inspired by ancient wisdom and using local ingredients and a focus on holistic health. With that in mind, Joanne went searching for somebody special to act as their Wellness Ambassador and met a very special Buddhist Nun on a return route from Myanmar. Read her story here.

Self Healing and Spirituality in Asia

 Yoga and Self-Healing in Bali

self healing retreats

It’s all well and good to go to your yoga class, to do your 20 minute meditation and talk about spirituality..but then you must live it. And here’s the rub. Life isn’t a continual series of Shivasana (much as that sounds highly appealing to me right now!). Life is full of challenges, can be a roller coaster and god damn it if I don’t lose my cool now and again!

Spiritual Healing in Bali

Spiritual Bali

Spiritual healing is now well known as an offering in Bali thanks to ‘Eat, Love, Pray’ but what’s it really all about and how can you tell who’s the real deal? That’s where we at Soul Sanctuaries step in. Since we love to be authentic, we join all spiritual healing experiences before suggesting them ourselves.

With that in mind we joined our good Balinese friends Wayan and Nyoman for a spiritual ‘magical mystery tour of Bali’ yesterday. Our remit was to go on a ‘jalan jalan’ (walkabout) together to begin to design some very special sacred day tours in Bali which would slip nicely into any of our Soul Retreats or wellness programs.

1 Giant Mind group meditation, Bali 10th June 2012

Yesterday a very special meditation gathering was held on a sacred beach site in Bali. People from all Bali communities converged infront of Pura Petitenget, a beach spot where regular Hindu ceremonies take place. The event was called The Bali Experiment and was the brainchild of American non profit organisation 1 Giant Mind.Their aim is to get millions of people meditating at the same time and measure the raise of consciousness. Spirituality and science converging.

1 Giant Mind held 2nd annual meditation event in Bali

Non profit organization 1 Giant Mind held their 2nd annual meditation event in Bali on the beach in front of Petitenget temple in Seminyak.

1 Giant Mind is a global research and education organization based in California. Their mission is to coordinate the largest simultaneous global experiences of “eyes closed silence” in human history and measure the collective effect through scientific research.  They are working towards uniting 100 million people to participate simultaneously in a global event and have the worlds’ leading scientific researchers’ study the effect on individuals, communities and society.1 Giant Mind also proposes to further the study of the effect of the collective human mind by conducting experiments on a scale never before attempted in human history.

Dedicated to the research and education of the effects of collective meditation, they use the term ‘eyes-closed silence’. Eyes Closed Silence (ECS) refers to any mental process including most common practices of meditation, prayer, observance of the breath, and contemplation that induces a set of integrated psycho physiological changes termed as the ‘relaxation response’.

Yoga and meditation for children, its a beautiful world

This morning I had the honor of observing my son’s class at Montessori primary school. A beautiful collection of 3-6 year olds, doing their own ‘work’, moving freely from table to table, friend to friend and making their own choices. Then at 9.30am a smiling Indonesian yoga teacher arrived and children who wanted to participate took their mats outside to meditate. Yes you heard me right, little meditators.

What’s a Yogathon? 12 hours of funding raising hilarity!

Notes post a 12-hour Yogathon at Desa Seni resort in Bali. Just how much yoga, meditation and kirtan can you fit into one day? I was almost levitating. I’m saying it again, that was simply the most fun way to raise money for Aids Awareness ever! I know I said that last year but you try toning your act down after you’ve practiced Kundalini, Hatha and downright Hilarious Yoga (care of the astonishly talented Cherie Rae, we love a gal who knows how to have everyone in happy baby and belly laughing!).

“If you think you’re so enlightened…”

Ram Dass

One of my favorite quotes from Ram Dass is “If you think you are so enlightened, go spend a week with your parents” . There’s something about interactions with family that cut to the core and raise all kind of emotional traumas isn’t there. I remember when I decided to stop eating meat. In Asia this was no issue at all, there was no judgement. But when I returned to the North East of England you’d have thought that I had joined a cult! And I disappointed myself, gave in and ate meat the entire time I was visiting.
