Self Healing after divorce
1 Feb, 2014
Its never easy to make a decision that will change the course of your life. Recently a friend asked me my thoughts on separation and I honestly said that some days it seemed like leaving was the hard route. Deciding to feel those uncomfortable feelings as they arise instead of self medicating with a bottle of red, gave me the opportunity to begin to look at my patterns of behaviour. Its said that insanity is when you repeat the same actions over and over again expecting different results. After nearly sixteen years of addictive relationships, I dragged myself to a support group feeling entirely exhausted, depressed and confused. I’d heard all the catchphrases about the hard times being the ones you learn most from but when you feel like your on round twelve in the losing side of a boxing ring it really doesn’t help. I wanted to wallow in my own self pity and build up another layer of resentment, that was my go to attitude. But it doesn’t help to heal at all. Slowly with a little help from people in the know, I’m starting to find out who I am. 43 years old and I had no clue what I really like to do or how I want to behave. I’d based my entire life on what I thought others wanted, a chronic people pleaser and over achiever I’d excelled on the outside and numbed on the inside.
In this world of instant success, soul searching and finding new ways of behaving which have positive results just doesn’t happen overnight. As a person who sells luxury wellness holidays for a living, that’s not a great advert, but honestly what you’re getting by taking a self healing holiday, a yoga vacation in luxury or a body and soul detox is a kick start to a new way of living. You’re giving yourself the chance to change course and sail a different route through life, one which will bring a little more joy and happiness.
