Anti Gravity Yoga and Meditation in Bali

anti gravity yogaSoul Sanctuaries founder Joanne feeling footloose and fancy free

Always on the search for new authentic wellness experiences for our guests, we heard that Four Seasons Sayan in Ubud, Bali had commissioned a rather special yoga bale. Designed by award winning architect and lover of all things bamboo, Elora Hardy, the yoga bale, which rests at the foot of the resort, was inspired by a lotus petal. Created from sustainable local bamboo, it offers shelter from the elements and is home to the island’s first AntiGravity Yoga.

Yoga and meditation for children, its a beautiful world

This morning I had the honor of observing my son’s class at Montessori primary school. A beautiful collection of 3-6 year olds, doing their own ‘work’, moving freely from table to table, friend to friend and making their own choices. Then at 9.30am a smiling Indonesian yoga teacher arrived and children who wanted to participate took their mats outside to meditate. Yes you heard me right, little meditators.

One Day Without Shoes Bali Style

Yogi’s gather for One Day Without Shoes

Once upon a time a young entrepreneur named Blake MyCoskie took a life changing trip to Argentina, where he witnessed how devastating it was for youngsters to go without shoes. Not only did they suffer from debilitating diseases but many schools refused them an education unless they came to school wearing shoes. Determined to do something about this, Blake (who knew nothing of the fashion industry) set up his shoe company TOM’s and declared that for every pair of shoes purchased, TOM’s would give away a pair to a child in need. That was 6 years ago and over 1 million pairs of shoes given away later (by Sept 2010).

What’s a Yogathon? 12 hours of funding raising hilarity!

Notes post a 12-hour Yogathon at Desa Seni resort in Bali. Just how much yoga, meditation and kirtan can you fit into one day? I was almost levitating. I’m saying it again, that was simply the most fun way to raise money for Aids Awareness ever! I know I said that last year but you try toning your act down after you’ve practiced Kundalini, Hatha and downright Hilarious Yoga (care of the astonishly talented Cherie Rae, we love a gal who knows how to have everyone in happy baby and belly laughing!).

“If you think you’re so enlightened…”

Ram Dass

One of my favorite quotes from Ram Dass is “If you think you are so enlightened, go spend a week with your parents” . There’s something about interactions with family that cut to the core and raise all kind of emotional traumas isn’t there. I remember when I decided to stop eating meat. In Asia this was no issue at all, there was no judgement. But when I returned to the North East of England you’d have thought that I had joined a cult! And I disappointed myself, gave in and ate meat the entire time I was visiting.

An ode to a new Yoga Teacher

This morning I went to support my friend who recently became a Yoga Teacher. Faltering on whether she could really teach, she got the courage up to hire a hall and get a few ‘guinea pigs’ in to try out her new skills. Firstly, I want to say hands up to anyone who dares to follow their dreams. Making your passions a reality is what life’s really all about isn’t it? Setting your soul on fire! …

The gift that keeps on giving

Central to our business plan for Soul Sanctuaries is a giving program called ‘Give a Little Soul a Sanctuary’. We believe that it will be the icing on the cake if somebody came to partake in one of our health programs or wellness retreats and not only helped themselves but also benefited someone in need too. A portion of each participants payment will go direct to a child in need. You’ll be able to see how children have benefited in our website widget and our Giving Reports as well as Social Media updates.

Spend a moment to recall the last time you helped someone in need, whether donating funds, time or advice. How did you feel afterwards? Pretty damn good eh. That feeling of universality and love is just like the gift that keeps on giving. Lets see what the guru’s say about this…

Is it my ego or does this Yoga Retreat suck?

Part of our work in developing Soul Sanctuaries is to seek out amazing off the beaten track havens where we can send guests or run one of our signature Soul Retreats in the near future. So we packed our bags and headed off to a possible sanctuary in the misty mountains in Bali.

Location, tropical wilderness (check)

Greeting on arrival, warm and friendly (check)

Accommodation, luxurious, nice energy and peaceful (check)

Cuisine, mediocre and a bit disorganized

Spa Treatments, automotron comes to mind? When did a soft Javanese massage become a shiatsu?

Yoga class (advance apologies to anyone who thinks my ego got the better of me here but this class was awful, hilarious and a bit dangerous for your health at the same time!)

Kundalini Yoga all your woes away?

This morning I headed off to my regular Kundalini class in Bali, which always makes me feel balanced and creative afterwards. Have to say I wasn’t feeling too great beforehand (hormonal chaos). If you’ve been to a Kundalini class before you’ll probably have experienced feeling physically exhausted during repetitive movements, but really pushing yourself beyond your preconceived limits. Well, after moving rapidly, breathing in sync and Sat Nam-ing my way through the class, I later totally lost my cool at the bank… not very Om to say the least!
